Thorvald Bindesbøll

I'm interested in learning more about the Danish designer Thorvald Bindesbøll (1846-1908). I'm always interested in finding inspiring figures in design, and it would seem Bindesbøll was a remarkably talented designer, working in ceramics, silver, graphics, furniture and architecture. A major design prize is named after him. Unfortunately, I haven't found much in English to tell me about him. I've only found a exhibition catalog, Thorvald Bindesbøll: A pioneer in Danish Design (Museet pa Kolinghus, 1997), which lacks any illustrations at all (!)

If you are aware of other resources, please let me know.

Hi -

There are two additional books on Thorvald Bindesbøll from the Museum at Koldinghus. One, Thorvald Bindesbøll og sølvsmedene, subtitled Thorvald Bindesbøll and the silversmiths is by museum director, Poul Dedenrouth-
schou. It is richly illustrated with pictures of silver designed by Bindesbøll, and pictures of original drawing pages of his designs.
ISBN 87-87152-31-2

A second book, Thorvald Bindesbøll En dansk pioner(a Danish pioneer) is a series of papers in Danish, with English summaries, on his various works in architecture, textiles, book design, ceramics, sculpture and silver. This book, too, is richly illustrated.
ISBN 87-87075-98-9

Both books can currently be had at http://www.abebooks.com

There is also some good information on-line, among other things, an essay by Poul Dedenroth-Schou, Modern Art of Metalwork at http://www.broehan-museum.de/metallw7.htm

Poke around and you will find images of his Carlsberg beer labels and much more.

You may correspond with me.
